Diawling National Park is located to the southwest of Mauritania, in the area surrounding the Senegal river delta. A large part of the park is made up of great lakes and the site is known for containing more than 220 different identified bird species.

Diawling is part of a Cross-border Biosphere Reserve, and as such is a highly important bird nesting site due to the combination of fresh and salty water present in the Senegal river delta. The park is also home to an important population of primates, wild boars and wild donkeys.

Away from the flood plains there are huge forests comprising tamarisk trees together with woody bushes and other trees that are endemic the savannah regions. Work on the recuperation and conservation of the degraded ecosystems of this park has been going on since the 1970s, with various successful cooperation projects being undertaken that have led to improvements to the area’s biodiversity and to its fishing, forestry and livestock resources.

Every year, the park undertakes tree-planting projects in order to preserve the environment and which have a socio-economic value (species planted include Magroves, Sprobrobolus, acacia trees). Improvements have also been made to biodiversity habitats through mechanical control actions taken against invasive aquatic plants and reeds, including Typha autralis, Tamarix senegalensis, etc.
