Cape Verde’s National Environmental Directorate boasts a long track record in environmental matters, especially in terms of the country’s flora. In this regard, it has developed an environmental information system, SIA, a technical, strategic, political and institutional instrument for the organisation, circulation and dissemination of environmental issues.

In addition, it has created a tool known as Environmental Impact Assessment.

The main fields of action of Cape Verde’s General Environmental Directorate are listed below:

• To plan and administer development;

• To protect the optimum and integrated use of natural resources and their relationship with national environmental policy;

• To coordinate transverse systems with an impact on ecological sustainability and protection of the country’s natural biodiversity;

• Management of urban waste, risk prevention and integrated control of contamination and environmental education, ensuring participation and information from the general public, non-government organisations and companies.
